I think it was partially the realism of the locale but more so a nod to the fleeting moments between the two or even a nod to the fact the we, the audience, were the flies. Acting was superb. Hammer and Chalamet are breathtaking in their roles. Watch the press videos of them together and you can see the chemistry off screen. Both have said that this movie changed them for the better.

This is absolutely the most beautiful coming of age movie between two young men I've watched since Brian (Gale Harold ) and Justin ( Randy Harrison) in queer as folk (showtime series)❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️. I find many romance movies involving young people tend to get very cliché ridden. The characters tend to be very two dimensional and often find themselves in situations we have seen a million times before. These things make for a very laughable soap opera type of film whether it's a gay or hetero pair of lovers.
Timothee Chalamet plays 17 y/o Elio and Armie Hammer is 29 y/o Oliver who fall in love over the summer of '83 in Northern Italy. Much of the usual clichéd plot lines in gay love stories are absent in this movie; there are no typical "bullying" or "I'm confused" subplots to cause distraction. The characters are multi dimensional and the story has some twists. I found the pace somewhat slow though.
The only thing that concerns me with the movie is the age difference between the two characters, despite their maturity Although both actors are adults in real life, the age difference is a little disquieting though there is no suggestion of force, psychological or physical. In the book, Oliver is 24.

The film succeeded in giving the characters' feelings to the audience. Homosexuality is preventing love. But the reason for their homosexuality is love. If they are not in love, they will not be homosexual.

A Mediterranean boy look and an American Midwestern look. Totally opposite on the spectrum but maybe that is endearing in itself. Also I think it is good to have Americans and Europeans making a movie because there are more things brought to the table, so to speak. This movie and game of thrones have a similar cast and director mix. All European and all American cast movies just do not rise to this level. That goes for the writers and directors also. Can anyone give other examples. This movie was so beautiful. Best movie I've seen in a long time. Those slow moments were some of the best moments.

This scene alone deserves him any award, The happiness (Oliver called) surprise (about the engagement) inner anger (about the marriage) subtle pleading (when he told Oliver the his parents knows about them sort of What about us) and longing(calling Oliver by his own name)convey so well, This is THE SCENE that will end all scene. As a gay man I can tell you I was touched by some of it but I'm quite sure not everyone is going to enjoy this. It's actually a bit of a downer.
It's sad that people, gay people especially, have had to shut off their feelings in the past or in some areas of the world. When you think of how powerful those feelings of love are it's painful to watch this.
But do you really want to see that in a film? I don't.
